RENTRI – National Electronic Waste Tracking Register

The RENTRI is the tool on which the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security bases the traceability of waste and provides for the digitisation of documents relating to the movement and transport of waste.

Subjects obliged to register

They are required to register with RENTRI, through the registration to the e-platform for the upload of data, the entities referred to in Article 188-bis of Legislative Decree No. 152 of 2006, as last amended by Legislative Decree No. 213 of 2022, listed below:

  1. entities and companies that treat waste;
  2. producers of hazardous waste;
  3. institutions and undertakings that collect or transport hazardous waste on a professional basis or act as dealers and brokers of hazardous waste;
  4. consortia established for the recovery and recycling of particular types of waste;
  5. persons referred to in Article 189(3) of Legislative Decree No. 152 of April 3rd 2006, with reference to non-hazardous waste.

Subjects referred to in point 5. are:

  • transporters of non-hazardous waste;
  • brokers of non-hazardous waste;
  • producers of non-hazardous waste pursuant to points c) d) and g) of Article 184 of Legislative Decree 152/2006 as amended and supplemented with more than 10 employees.

The classification referred to in Article 184 is given below:
(c) waste produced in the course of industrial processing other than municipal waste;
d) special waste produced in the context of craft processing other than municipal waste;
(g) waste from the recovery and disposal of waste, sludges from the purification of drinking water and other water treatment and from the purification of waste water, as well as waste from flue-gas cleaning, septic tanks and sewers

By February 13, 2025

By February 13th 2025, the first deadline set by Ministerial Decree 59/2023 for registration, some 70,000 operators falling into these categories will have to register:

  • waste recovery and disposal facilities,
  • transporters and brokers of waste,
  • entities with more than 50 employees that produce hazardous waste or non-hazardous waste from industrial and craft processing and from the treatment of waste, water and fumes.

From February 13th 2025, these entities will have to keep their loading and unloading registers, with the new models and in digital format, using their own management systems or the support services made available by RENTRI.

By August 14, 2025

Entities that are initial producers of hazardous and non-hazardous special waste with more than 10 and up to 50 employees shall register as of June 15th 2025 and by August 14th 2025.

By February 13, 2026

Entities that are initial producers of only special hazardous waste with 10 or fewer employees are required to register with RENTRI as from December 15th 2025 and by February 13th 2026 .

Producers of special hazardous waste that are not part of entity and enterprise organisations are required to register with RENTRI as of December 15th 2025 and by February 13th 2026, regardless of the number of employees.
